Hillsboro pair indicted on meth, endangering children charges

A Hillsboro pair whose rented home caught fire in September has been indicted of charges of first-degree felony manufacturing drugs and charges of endangering children.
Casey Scarberry and David Bailey were indicted by a grand jury in Highland County Common Pleas Court last week, and each was arraigned Nov. 4 on four charges of endangering children, felonies of the third degree; and charges of illegal manufacture of drugs, felonies of the first degree.
Bailey was also indicted on an additional charge of felonious assault, a felony of the second degree.
On Sept. 24 Hillsboro Fire and Rescue and the Hillsboro Police Department responded to a fire in the 100 block of East Pleasant Street.
According to police, the family was at home when the fire started in the two-story dwelling. When authorities began looking for the home's occupants while at the scene, they were told by witnesses they had left.
Officers at the scene said evidence was indicating the fire may have originated from a meth lab. The Leesburg and Lynchburg fire departments also responded to the scene, and the Marshall Fire Department and Leesburg EMS responded for station coverage.
Scarberry is being held on $50,000 bond and Bailey is being held on $100,000 bond at the Highland County Justice Center.
A pretrial hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 1.

• James Gibson, illegal manufacture of drugs, a felony of the second degree; illegal assembly or possession of chemicals used in the manufacture of drugs.
• James J. Hester II, aggravated trafficking in drugs, a felony of the fourth degree; breaking and entering, a felony of the fifth degree; theft, a felony of the fifth degree.
• Matthew Newman, trafficking in crack cocaine, a felony of the fifth degree; possession of crack cocaine, a felony of the fifth degree.
• Daniel Hatfield, breaking and entering, a felony of the fifth degree; theft, a felony of the fifth degree.
• Tabitha West, breaking and entering, a felony of the fifth degree; theft, a felony of the fifth degree.
• Anthony Pugh, theft, a felony of the fifth degree.
• Dontay Lamar Burns, possession of heroin, a felony of the fifth degree.
• Shelby Lea Brooks, four counts of forgery, felonies of the fifth degree; receiving stolen property, a felony of the fifth degree.
• Aaron Stephens, forgery, a felony of the fifth degree; receiving stolen property, a felony of the fifth degree.
• George Bronner, safecracking, a felony of the fourth degree; aggravated theft, a felony of the second degree.
