Hillsboro mayor's budget increases 40 percent

A comparison in total departmental expenses in the Hillsboro mayor's office from 2011 to 2012 shows a 40-percent increase in spending, according to data provided by Hillsboro City Auditor Gary Lewis this week, after a public records request by The Highland County Press.
In 2011, former Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink's budget had year-to-date expenses of $132,614.63.
In 2012, Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings' budget had year-to-date expenses of $186,016.20.
Zink is a Democrat. Hastings is a Republican.
The 2012 departmental budget saw an increase in spending of $53,401,57 or 40 percent over the previous year.

Among the 2012 increases were:
• A $25,691 increase in departmental wages, from $83,601 to $109,292;
• A $5,500 increase in contractual services, from $0 to $5,500;
• A $1,217 increase in travel expenses, from $194 to $1,411;
• A $1,040 increase in office supplies, from $652 to $1,692;
• A $1,934 increase in communications, from $4,203 to $6,137;
• A $3,920 increase in rents and leases, from $618 to $4,538; and,
• A $6,943 increase in capital outlay/equipment, from $0 to $6,943.
