Hillsboro mayor proclaims March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings has proclaimed March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, and commemorated the proclamation with a visit from clients and staff members of Hills and Dales Training Center.
Hastings read the proclamation at the Hillsboro City Building Thursday, before Hills and Dales representatives Earl Stone, Sara Trout, Justin Lambert, Randy Heaton, Charlie Miller and Theresa Smith. Highland County Commissioners Tom Horst and Shane Wilkin were also in attendance.
Hastings read in the proclamation that Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is, "An opportunity for increasing education, awareness and community inclusion, and paves the way toward improving the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities. Individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, friends and neighbors, and coworkers encourage everyone to focus on the abilities of all people. The most effective way to increase this awareness is through everyone's active participation in community activities and the openness to learn and acknowledge each individual's contribution, and opportunities with (people with) developmental disabilities to function as independently and productively as possible."

Hills and Dales Training Center will hold an open house from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, with the public encouraged to attend. The annual balloon launch celebration will take place at 1 p.m. at the facility, located at 8919 U.S. 50 in Hillsboro.
