Hillsboro man indicted on aggravated vehicular homicide charge

A Hillsboro man has been indicted on a charge of aggravated vehicular homicide, stemming from a September three-vehicle crash that left one dead, and others injured. 

Kevin Dehaas, 21, of Hillsboro, according to the Wilmington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, was driving southbound on state Route 138 in a 1996 Saturn on Sept. 17 when he allegedly attempted to pass a Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Mickey Berry, 23, of Hillsboro. 

Henry Stroop, 64, of Lynchburg, was driving northbound on state Route 138 in a 2008 PT Cruiser, and was struck head-on by both vehicles, according the Post. 

Stroop was pronounced dead at the scene by the Highland County Coroner's Office. 

Dehaas, and a passenger in the Berry vehicle were transported to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton for injuries, while other passengers were transported to Highland District Hospital for treatment. 

A grand jury in Highland County Common Pleas Court indicted Dehaas on March 11 on one count of aggravated vehicular homicide, a felony of the second degree. 

He was arrested on April 8 by the Highland County Sheriff's Office. 

Dehaas was arraigned on April 11 and Jacob Wagoner was appointed as his attorney. 

A jury trial has been scheduled for May 12. 

Berry has also indicted on a charge of third-degree felony aggravated vehicular homicide. As previously reported in The Highland County Press, a jury trial for Berry has also been scheduled for May 12. His attorney, Bruce Wallace, is considering hiring a reconstruction effort.
