Highland House Museum adds one-room schoolhouses map

Visitors to the Highland House Museum on East Main Street in Hillsboro will find a new addition to the recently opened schoolroom exhibit. It is a large map showing the approximate locations of over 150 past one-room schoolhouses plus past and present educational facilities within Highland County.
The addition is the result of up-to-date research by Tara Beery and Kathy Levo to discover and build upon original research conducted by the late Bob Patton.
Intrigued by the Northwest Ordinance’s “school lands” clause (settling aside one section in each township for the “maintenance of public schools”) led Mr. Patton to seek out information regarding the one-room school buildings that dotted the landscape of what was to become Highland County.
Mr. Patton’s research found many of these buildings still standing. His findings were published in the Southern Ohio Genealogical Society’s newsletters as well as featured in a book about the 2007 Highland County Bicentennial celebration.
The Highland County Historical Society wishes to thank McCarty Engineering and employees for
their time and efforts to produce this enlightening map as well as its donation.
The map and school room exhibit may be viewed during Highland House Museum open hours
on Friday and Saturday afternoons between 1 and 4. The Museum is located at 151 East Main
Street in Hillsboro. Admission to the Museum and gift shop is free with donations welcome.
