Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month, by presidential proclamation, to highlight contributions of women in history and society. The Highland County Republican Women’s Club at their March meeting honored two women, each of whom have made significant leadership and education impacts in our county.

Shawn Priest is honored for her service as the former Leesburg Mayor, 2021-2024, and as a teacher in the Fairfield schools for over 39 years. In addition, she has been a  precinct worker for the Board of Elections for over 20 years. She has contributed many hours supporting the Republican party as secretary of the executive committee and as editor of the newsletters.

Kathleen “Kay” Ayres (1938-2020) was posthumously recognized for her service as a teacher of history and civics and for her volunteer community service in Highland County and across the state. She was a big supporter of 4-H and served on local boards, including Southern State Community College. She served many years as Chairwoman of the Highland County Republican Party and was named Vice-Chairwoman of the Ohio Republican Party, where she brought small town and rural concerns to politicians in Columbus.

The HCRC honors and recognizes the accomplishments of women, past and present, who have contributed to our communities and our quality of life in Highland County and the state and nation.
