On Friday, Sept. 26, Highland County will mark the start of its participation in the America 250-Ohio commemoration with a community event at Liberty Park in Hillsboro. The event, beginning at 3 p.m., will feature the planting of 18 white oak trees – one for Highland County and one for each of its 17 townships – as part of the statewide Heritage Tree Program.

The event will take place east of the Highland County Family YMCA’s gravel parking lot which is located at 201 Diamond Drive in Hillsboro.

The tree planting will serve as the official kickoff of Highland County’s America 250 planning, building momentum toward a multi-day celebration in July 2026 honoring the nation’s 250th anniversary.

“These trees represent both our roots and our legacy,” said Brad Roades, president of the Highland County Board of Commissioners. “They’re a symbol of our commitment to preserving history and building a strong future.”

The white oak, Ohio’s state tree, was selected for its longevity and historical significance. During the event, local officials will offer remarks and unveil plans for Highland County’s 2026 celebration, including a theatrical reenactment of the Philip Partridge trial, Pioneer Day exhibits, historical walking tours, and a Revolutionary War memorial dedication. This event will culminate in a “living history” concert recreating the Hillsboro Military Band, which played an integral role in community gatherings from 1880-1910.

The community is invited to attend the tree planting, which will include opportunities for local involvement, education, and reflection.
