Highland County commissioners recognize Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Commissioners David Daniels, Brad Roades and Terry Britton issued a proclamation recognizing March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Highland County during their Wednesday, March 13 meeting.

Accepting the proclamation was Molly Warnock, Highland County Board of DD transition manager.

“Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is really just about educating the public, and also empowering people with disabilities to talk about their abilities and not their disabilities, working out in the community and engaging in activities in the community,” Warnock told commissioners. “We’re just trying to educate the public and tell them what it's all about.”

DD Awareness Month is observed annually each March. According to the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council, the March 2024 theme is “A World of Opportunities.”

“We’re celebrating people and working together to remove obstacles,” the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council
posted on their Facebook. “Our goal is to build a community that’s committed to creating a world where everyone can do well and succeed. Join us in making a world where all kinds of people have the chance to thrive.”

After meeting with Warnock, Daniels read the proclamation in honor of DD Awareness Month.

“We encourage all citizens to realize that individuals with developmental disabilities should be afforded opportunities in the community, including full access to housing, employment and recreational activities,” the proclamation read. “Opportunities for citizens with developmental disabilities to function as independently and productively as possible must be fostered within our community.”
