Highland County Auditor Alex Butler announces campaign

Highland County Auditor
Highland County is home, and I want it to be the best it can be. For me, community service and civic leadership are how I give back. I am proud to serve as your County Auditor, and I am announcing my candidacy for re-election.
From day one, my focus has been on customer service, transparency, and accessibility. The County Auditor’s Office is funded by you and exists to serve you. Meeting with concerned citizens is one of the most important parts of this job, even when the conversations are difficult. Listening, explaining, and being honest with the public is not optional. It is the responsibility of this office.
In recent years, one of the most pressing issues facing our community has been unvoted increases in property taxes. These increases place a real financial burden on families, seniors, and small businesses across Highland County.
While the Auditor does not set tax policy, I believe strongly that the office must be an advocate for taxpayers. During my first term, I have personally met with hundreds of residents, spoken at public events throughout the county, and hosted meetings in multiple communities to help people understand their tax bills and their options.
Beyond public engagement, we have made meaningful improvements inside the Auditor’s Office. We updated our real estate software and website to provide clearer property records, better imagery, and detailed tax distribution information.
We strengthened internal policies to improve state audit outcomes and increased budgetary controls to better protect taxpayer dollars. I was also proud to be involved in statewide lobbying efforts that helped advance recent property tax reform legislation, which will provide relief to Highland County homeowners in the years ahead.
There is still important work to be done. I am seeking re-election to continue advocating for transparency, accountability, and service, and I respectfully ask for your consideration and your vote. For those I have not yet had the opportunity to meet, I sincerely invite you to call or visit the office with any questions or concerns.
