Greenfield Skate Park receives $25,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant
A local project to build a skate park in Greenfield recently received a $25,000 grant through the Pepsi Refresh Project.
In 2010, the Pepsi Refresh Project is giving away $20 million dollars in the U.S. to fund good ideas, big and small, that move communities forward. Grants range from $5,000 to $250,000 and each month Pepsi will give out up to 32 grants equaling $1.3 million.
At refresheverything.com, the public gets to vote on which ideas will win a Pepsi Refresh Grant. Throughout the month of July, thousands of voters across the country voted every day to help Greenfield Skate Park win a Pepsi Refresh Project grant.
As founders of the Greenfield Skate Park Project, Jeff and Joy Pence want to provide a safe and fun place for Greenfield Youth to practice their sport. Skateboarding is currently the fastest growing sport in America with well over 13 million participants.
Prior to winning the Pepsi Refresh Project, the Greenfield Skate Park was awarded $5,000 from the Tony Hawk Foundation. The kids raised several thousand dollars selling Jack Links at the school, that money along with donations from kind local citizens plus a grant match from American Ramp Company, the skatepark was able to install phase I of the project.
The project is located at Mitchell Park on the old tennis court. The tennis court was sealed and made ready for the ramps by Quality Paving.
The Pepsi Refresh Project Grant for $25,000 will purchase ramps to complete the next phase. The grand opening for the Skate Park will be Oct. 23 at noon.
The skatepark will be looking for additional ways to raise funds to purchase a half-pipe. The cost for a half-pipe alone is $25,000.
