Greenfield Historical Society hosts annual History Day Oct. 3

The Greenfield Historical Society will hold its ninth annual History Day on Saturday, Oct. 3.
The event will be held at the society's complex of historical buildings on the east edge of Greenfield, near the state Route 28 bridge. Hours for the event will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
The Red Barn will be open for guests to view the Wilson Conestoga Wagon, Patterson Mail Buggy, Browder Life Saving Machine and the Ahrens-Fox Fire Truck as well as other items of agriculture and transportation. The barnyard will also be the site of various vintage and restored automobiles.
Mike Mincey will be setting up his apple cider press in the barnyard and demonstrating the process of pressing apples to make cider.
This year we will host reenactors from the Brigade of the American Revolution. Carol Curren and Steve Lind will be on hand to show visitors the life of a Virginia militia during the 1780s. Steve re-enacts the life of a rifleman in Crockett’s Battalion and Carol is the wife that follows the army. They look forward to sharing their experiences with visitors.

The Smith Tannery will be open with Susan Long playing the society's Miller pump organ. She will be performing at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Also in the Smith Tannery will be displays of newly donated vintage clothing.
Tom Adams will be setting up in the B&O Depot. This year he will be setting up his McClain High School display that he shared at the recent McClain 100th anniversary.
New displays will be found in several of the buildings including some of Jim Roads’ paintings of school buildings in the area. Travellers Rest will include a display of recent donations to the society as well as letters and postcards from the archives. These have been copied and placed in the cubbyholes of the Waddell mail sorting table for visitors to read.
Attic sales will be held along McArthur Way this year. People are invited to set up a booth and sell their items. Several sellers have committed to the day selling jewelry, baked goods, antiques and miscellaneous. Anyone can set up a booth. Space rental is just $10, no reservations required. Set up begins at 9 a.m.

Food for the day includes pork loin sandwiches smoked by Chris Dodds on site. Rounding out the menu will be bean soup, hot dogs, cornbread, drinks and desserts.
Hours for the event will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with lunch beginning at 11 a.m. and continuing throughout the day.
The annual History Day serves two purposes for the society. First, it gets people to visit the society's historical complex and learn about Greenfield's history. Secondly, it is a major money maker for the society. History Day provides a means to accomplish both purposes. Visitors are invited to see a part of Greenfield's history, learn something new, find a bargain, enjoy good food and visit with friends while supporting the work of the Greenfield Historical Society.
