George Voinovich dies at 79

Former Ohio Governor and U.S. Sen. George Voinovich died Sunday, June 12. He was 79.

According to an Associated Press report, "In June 2003, doctors implanted a cardiac pacemaker because his heart rate had slowed down over several years due to a condition called progressive sinus bradycardia and Voinovich had experienced various health challenges in recent years."

Voinovich was born July 15, 1936 in Cleveland, the son of Josephine (Bernot) and George S. Voinovich. His father was of Croatian Serb descent and his mother was of Slovenian ancestry.

He was a U.S. senator from 1999 to 2011. A member of the Republican Party, he also served as the 65th governor of Ohio from 1991-98 and as the 54th mayor of Cleveland from 1980-89.

Voinovich earned a bachelor of arts degree in government from Ohio University in 1958 where he served as president of the Student Body. Voinovich received a law degree in 1961 from the Moritz College of Law at the Ohio State University. He married his wife, Janet, in 1962. They had four children: George, Betsy, Peter, and Molly, as well as seven grandchildren. Molly, their youngest child, was killed at age 9 after being struck by a van as she walked home from school.
