Officer Gene Coleman was honored as grand marshal of the 2016 Greene Countrie Towne Festival Parade Sunday, July 17.
Mr. Coleman was a longtime Greenfield police officer and resident of Greenfield.
He spent 29 years in law enforcement before retiring in 1984.
Mr. Coleman was the first African-American officer of the Greenfield Police Department, and also believed to be the first African-American to be a deputy with the Highland County Sheriff’s Office.
In addition to his law enforcement experience, Mr. Coleman spent many years coaching youth league baseball and basketball teams. He and his twin brother, the late Glenn Coleman, were both active in coaching for many years.

On Saturday night at the annual festival sponsored by the Greenfield Rotary Club, Don and Gary Adams and the Greenfield Express entertained a huge crowd with their popular country music show.
