Gas prices reach $3.19 in Hillsboro; highest rate since 2008

Holiday travelers have more to contend with than just cold and icy weather, as gas prices have soared past $3 a gallon.
In Hillsboro Tuesday afternoon, gas prices averaged $3.19, and according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, nationally prices are at their highest rate since 2008.
The EIA is reporting that Ohio's Average gas price was $3.10 Monday, up from the $2.92 it was a week ago. Gas prices have been increasing over the holiday.
According to a news release from AAA Ohio Auto Club, "The current national retail average price for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline is $3.04, up six cents from a week ago, 19 cents from a month ago, and 44 cents from a year ago. This marked the first time that the US has ever nationally spent Christmas Eve with a $3 or greater per gallon price at the pump.
"Traditionally, the week leading up to Christmas sees little movement in the markets as traders are content to wrap-up their trading activity for tax purposes. This year proved the exception to this norm as, despite a typical light-volume trading week, crude felt upward pressure primarily generated by bullish sentiment from a highly positive report by the Department of Energy (DOE) on market fundamentals," according to AAA.
The Associated Press reported that, according to AAA, fuel prices "are rising now because of increasing demand for fuel overseas" and that AAA spokesperson Kimberly Schwind said she thinks prices at the pump could reach 3.75 by spring.
