Four council committees to meet Tuesday

With the intent of examining the city's budgets, pubic perception, and property sale opportunities, four meetings for individual committees of the Hillsboro City Council will meet Tuesday in council chambers at the Hillsboro fire station.
The property maintenance and restoration committee will meet at 5 p.m. to review the proposed ordinance on temporary signs; the zoning and annexation committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. to review the railroad right-of-way and the notification of the county commissioners on the and create a statement of services for U.S. 62 north property; the community enhancement committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. on a perception survey on city services; and the finance will meet at 7 p.m. to review the 2011 budget.
Hillsboro Auditor Gary Lewis has projected the city is facing in 2011 is a projected budget deficit of approximately $400,000 by the end of the year. During council's regular meeting on Jan. 10 council president Lee Koogler asked finance committee chairperson Peter Pence to start looking at the budget so that the city can have it in place by February. The city had passed temporary appropriations in December, which should carry the city through the end of February, according to Lewis.
During that meeting Hillsboro Safety and Service Director Ralph Holt asked Koogler what "role" the finance committee would play in determining the budget.
"Finance's job is ultimately to make a recommendation of the budget that's presented and ultimately enacted by council," Koogler said. "The information, obviously, that is going to go into that, I think, would be critical coming from the administration and other various departments in terms of what the financial outlook looks like, what the requests are in terms of making that budget."
