Former Highland County Commissioner and Madison Township Trustee Richard C. Unger, Jr. has died. He was 67.

In addition to his public service, Unger, of Greenfield, was a lifelong farmer. He was the recipient of the American Farmer Degree and the Ohio Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year and was the past president of Ohio Young Farmers Association.

"When he ran for commissioner, I switched parties to vote for him in the primary," Greenfield City Manager Ron Coffey said. "That's how much I thought of Rick.

"He was active in the community, and anything to do with the ag community in particular. We need more of those kinds of people in our community."

Unger was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greenfield, where Coffey said he was "active in the church for as long as I can remember."

He is survived by his wife, Vicki (Lucas) Unger; three children, Matt (Jodi) Unger, Jason (Leah) Unger and Holly (James) Williams; and many other family members.

The Murray-Fettro Funeral Home in Greenfield is serving the family. A visitation is scheduled for 4-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15 at the First United Methodist Church of Greenfield with Rev. Emory Clark and Rev. Terry Washburn officiating.

"He was a good, honest, hardworking man," Coffey said. "It's a great loss for Greenfield to lose someone like Rick. My heart goes out to Rick's family. We're going to miss him, that's for sure."
