On Tuesday, July 7, area firefighters assembled in Hillsboro at the fire station on North East Street for training on pump operations. This training was sponsored by the Highland County Firefighters Association.

The class on basic pump operations was led by Chris Kessinger of the Paint Creek Joint EMS and Fire District, who is a state certified fire instructor.

The class was an introductory level training and taught area firefighters the basics of pump operations using fire engines provided by Marshall, Highland North and Paint Creek departments.

Students were able to receive hands-on training in learning to operate the pumps, to draft water from sources other than hydrants such as portable tanks, ponds or pools.

For some students who are new to the fire service, this was basic instruction, while for others who have been in the fire service for a longer time; it was a good refresher and opportunity to improve their skills.

All firefighters were given the opportunity to become familiar with the trucks from each department which is beneficial in the event of mutual aid operations.

Kessinger stated that this was the first of a series of trainings on pump operations, which will progress from the basics to advanced operations.

Departments with members present at the training included Marshall, Highland North Joint Fire and EMS District (Leesburg), Southern Joint Fire District (Mowrystown), and Paint Creek.

The Highland County Firefighters Association sponsors both fire and EMS training to all area departments each month at no cost to the departments.

Students receive CEU certificates to gain credit toward their recertification requirements, saving departments the expense of having to pay for classes or training sessions. These trainings are paid for through fundraisers during the year such as fish frys and the annual Kroger Klassic car show which will take place at Hobart Corporation on Saturday, July 25.
