Firefighters called to former Carmel schoolhouse

Shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, the Brush Creek Fire Department Station 600 was called to a "confirmed structure fire" at the old Carmel schoolhouse at 5565 S.R. 753 in Carmel.

Upon arrival, firefighters reported heavy smoke and flames showing and called for additional departments to respond.

In all, seven different departments responded to the fire. Responding with manpower and equipment for mutual aid were: Hillsboro, Paint Creek, Marshall, Bainbridge, Leesburg, and Lynchburg departments.

The structure was occupied at the time of the fire, but all residents reportedly were able to escape without serious injury.

The amount of damage was not estimated and the cause of the fire was not immediately determined.
