A pyrotechnics explosive device was detonated in Greenfield's Mitchell Park at approximately 11:35 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 by the Columbus bomb squad.
According to Greenfield Police Chief Tim Hester, a military style duffel bag was found beneath the Seventh Street bridge Wednesday afternoon with what appeared to be explosives inside the bag.
Hester said the area of the 200 block of South Seventh Street was evacuated and the bag was taken on the back of a fire engine to Mitchell Park, while the area was secured for the public safety. Greenfield police, the Greenfield Fire Department and the Highland County EMS responded.
"EMA director Jim Lyle felt the contents were stable enough to be transported to the park and away from the residential area," Hester said.
Hester said the explosive material and surrounding area were secured until the team from Columbus arrived.
There were no injuries reported and no arrests were made.
Hester encouraged anyone who comes across potentially dangerous materials or explosives to contact the police and fire departments immediately.
