Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz has announced her resignation as chair of the Democratic National Committee just as the 2016 DNC Convention is set to begin.
According to CNN, Schultz’s resignation “comes amid the release of leaked emails showing DNC staffers favoring Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders in the Democrats' 2016 primary contest.”
Shultz is still expected to participate in the Democrats’ national convention which begins Monday.
DNC Vice Chair Donna Brazile, who served as an adviser for Bill Clinton's campaigns in 1992 and 1996, will serve as interim chair through the election.
Schultz represents Florida's 23rd congressional district, which encompasses parts of Broward and Miami-Dade counties. For the 114th Congress, the House Committee on Appropriations recommended her to serve as a ranking member of the Legislative Branch Subcommittee.
She was born in 1966 in Long Island, N.Y. She attended the University of Florida and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1988 and with a master’s degree in 1990. She has been married to Steve Schultz for more than 20 years and together they have three children.
