Excavation begins on veterans memorial

Ford Excavating, of New Market, began work Wednesday on the new memorial, dedicated to the men women who have served in the United States' Armed Forces.
Ground was broken for the monument by members of VFW Post 9094 and the Highland County Board of Commissioners on Memorial Day in 2011.
Commissioner Tom Horst told The Highland County Press Wednesday that Ford Excavating was donating their services to the project.
"These boys are out donating their time," Horst said. "They've had other jobs, and then the wet weather put them behind. But now they have time to work on it. I think that it's great that we have people here in the community who are willing to do this. It will be really nice when we get it all done."
Horst said they hope to get concrete footers poured within the coming weeks, depending on the weather.
The current memorial, located on the south side of the courthouse, will eventually be moved to the southwest corner, where the new monument will stand. The ground will be leveled off to be even with the sidewalk, and a brick walkway will surround the monument. Bricks memorializing the name of a veteran have been on sale, and can still be purchased for $50 by calling (937) 393-0211.
During the dedicating and groundbreaking in May, Horst led the group in a prayer, saying, "This hallowed ground will stand forever in the honor of the servicemen and women that served from Highland County and around the globe."
