Demolition begins on former Webster Elementary School

Demolition of the former Webster Elementary School building began Monday morning, April 18.

Workers from Sibrel Excavating were using a hydraulic excavator to begin razing the structure along South Elm Street.

Representatives from the Hillsboro Church of Christ, which owns the property along West Walnut and South Elm streets, notified residents in the neighborhood that the project would begin this week.

An announcement also was made during the April 11 Hillsboro City Council meeting.

In a prepared statement, the Hillsboro Church of Christ apologized to the community for any inconvenience and also thanked the community for its "understanding and cooperation.

"The Webster building has been a part of our community for years, but has become unsightly and unsafe due to nonstop disrespect and vandalism," the church said. "Ongoing attempts to find a suitable and viable buyer have yielded no serious offers. New city ordinances concerning vacant buildings are becoming more stringent. As a result, the time has come for us to remove the Webster building and its accompanying liability."

The demolition and cleanup will be continuing for the next few weeks.
