Daniels sponsors bill to designate portion of U.S. 50 as Pfc. Zachary Gullett Memorial Highway

Pending a vote from the Ohio Legislature, a portion of U.S. Route 50 may soon be dedicated to the memory and the sacrifice of PFC Zachary R. Gullett.
Gullett, a Hillsboro resident and 2004 Hillsboro High School graduate, died May 1, 2007 while serving in the U.S. Army in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq. He was a member of the 984th MP Co. of Ft. Carson, Colorado.
Rep. David Daniels, (R-Greenfield) of Ohio's 86th House District, has sponsored House Bill 593, which seeks to enact a section of the Ohio Revised Code "To designate a portion of United States Route 50 within Highland County the "Pfc. Zachary Gullett Memorial Highway."
"We certainly want to do all we can to recognize the sacrifice made by our veterans who have served, and I think it is only fitting that we dedicate a portion of Route 50 to the memory of Zach Gullett," Daniels told The Highland County Press this week.
Daniels said that the Bill will have to go through the committee process, where it may be set for a hearing when the Legislature goes back into session.
"Then there would be an opportunity to move the legislation forward," Daniels said. "I think, obviously, when you do something like this, it helps to have the support of the community. I think Highland County and the elected officials there have shown there commitment to supporting this initiative."
If the Bill has no obstacles, Daniels said it should move through the process "fairly quickly. There is always broad bipartisan support for these initiatives. Sometimes in the waning days of the Legislature there will be what we refer to as an omnibus Bill, where all these bills are rolled into one and voted on in a single measure. That moves it through the process rather quickly.
Daniels is also sponsoring House Bill 594, which seeks to "designate State Route 73 within Clinton County only as the "Sgt. Steven Conover - Veterans Memorial Highway" and to designate State Route 729 within Clinton County only as the "Lance Cpl. Brett Wightman - Veterans Memorial Highway."
"I am proud to sponsor these bills," Daniels said, "and I am happy to do whatever I can to make sure these are lasting memorials to our fallen soldiers, so the memory of their sacrifice lives on."
Gullett's parents, Mike and Connie Gullett of Hillsboro said that they are honored that the Bill has been presented.
"We're just glad that it's being done, and we appreciate it," said Connie Gullett, Zachary's mother. "It means a lot."
