Daniels looks forward to leading Agriculture Department

Gov. John R. Kasich has announced the appointment of Sen. David Daniels (R-Greenfield) to serve as director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA).
Daniels has represented Ohio's 17th Senate District since January 2011 and will submit his resignation to the Ohio Senate on Wednesday. He is expected to be sworn in and begin his duties as ODA director on Thursday, Feb. 16.
Daniels told The Highland County Press Wednesday that he appreciates the opportunity from the Kasich administration.
"First of all, I want to thank Gov. Kasich and his administration for putting their faith in me," Daniels said. "I certainly did not seek this appointment. I was contacted about two weeks ago and asked if I would consider leading the Department of Agriculture. After talking with my wife and family, and doing some soul searching, I decided that this gives me an opportunity to serve agriculture in the state of Ohio."
Daniels noted that agriculture has always been a significant part of his life, having worked on the family farm for many years.
Daniels is a life-long farmer and, together with his father and uncle, operated Daniels Brothers Farm in Greenfield.
He also thanked voters and constituents in the 86th House District as well as the 17th Senate District.
"I've had a wonderful opportunity to serve in both the 86th House and 17th Senate districts," Daniels said. "I'm grateful to voters for giving me that opportunity."
When asked about the process for naming his successor in the Ohio Senate, Daniels said he anticipates that Ohio Senate President Tom Niehaus will outline the application process soon.
"I expect the Senate leadership will have a process to fill the vacancy, but they have not confided in me," Daniels said.
The longtime state legislator said "It's been a pleasure to serve in the General Assembly. I look forward to the new challenges in the Department of Agriculture."
John C. "Jack" Fisher, executive vice president of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, said Wednesday that the organization was pleased with the appointment of Daniels.
"The Ohio Farm Bureau is extremely pleased with Gov. Kasich's selection of Dave Daniels as director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture. As a farmer, small businessman and elected official, Sen. Daniels has proven his leadership ability and has demonstrated a deep understanding of agriculture and the food industry's economic and social importance to our state," Fisher said. "We believe Ohio's consumers and farmers will be well served by Mr. Daniels' leadership of this vital agency."
Daniels replaces Jim Zehringer, who Kasich appointed to lead the Ohio Department of Natural Resources in November 2011. Chief of Animal Health and State Veterinarian Dr. Tony Forshey has served as interm director of ODA since November and will resume his previously-held duties upon Daniels' swearing-in.
Daniels began his political career as a member of the Greenfield City Council. He then was elected as mayor of Greenfield, before going on to be a Highland County commissioner and a representative for Ohio's 86th House District. He was elected to the Senate in 2010.
[[In-content Ad]]According to his campaign biography, Daniels "learned the value of family and hard work on his family’s 500-acre farm. As a youth, (Daniels) participated in 4-H, FFA, and Boy Scouts, where he earned the Eagle Scout and God and Country Awards."
He is a 1975 graduate of McClain High School, and he also attended Laurel Oaks Career Development Center, where he was enrolled in the Farm Management Program. After high school, he assisted his father and uncle in running the family farm.
