A southern Ohio Marine whose wife is a 2004 graduate of Hillsboro High School has been seriously injured while on deployment in Afghanistan.

U.S. Marine Cpl. Josh Sams, 27, of Wilmington lost both legs above the knees after stepping on an IED (improvised explosive device) while on patrol.

Sams' mother-in-law, Marsha Miller, told The Highland County Press this week that Cpl. Sams was transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center near Washington, D.C., and that his wife, Lindsey (Miller) Sams was meeting him at the hospital.

Cpl. Sams is the son of Barb Regan and Pete Sams, both of Wilmington. Lindsey is the daughter of Larry and Marsha Miller of Hillsboro.

Cpl. Sams also suffered a broken arm and broken pelvis in the explosion, according to WLWT News.

He has been in the service six years and was serving his third and final deployment. He was scheduled to come home Feb. 7.

A Facebook page has been set up for get-well messages, support and updates. Also, National Bank and Trust is coordinating donations for the family.

"They would appreciate hearing words of support from their friends in the community," Marsha Miller said.
