Colerain Township Director of Public Safety Daniel P. Meloy returns to Hillsboro on Monday, June 20 to discuss the ongoing heroin/opiate epidemic in southern Ohio.
Last month, Meloy was the guest speaker at the Highland County Drug Abuse Prevention Coalition.
On June 20, he will be speaking on how the Colerain Township’s Quick Response Team has been able to respond to the heroin problem.
A former police officer, Meloy served as chief of police in Colerain (Hamilton County) for more than six years before he began overseeing both the fire and police departments as director of public safety in 2013.
Highland County TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party member and Hillsboro resident Barb Cole told The Highland County Press that Meloy’s program to combat the heroin problem has a “79-percent success rate.”
“The bottom line is the program saves lives,” Cole said. “Mr. Meloy will outline and explain the program and how it works.”
According to Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, “The opiate epidemic is the worst I’ve seen in my lifetime. We can’t continue to lose three to four people a day to opiate overdoses. Fentanyl is the latest substance to rise to the top of the alarming drug trend in our state.

“In 2010, we had only 34 cases of fentanyl and last year we had 1,110 cases. We’re on track this year to surpass 2015 numbers.”
Fentanyl, which first appeared in 2013 in Ohio, is 30 to 50 times stronger than heroin, according to the National Institute for Drug Abuse. Sometimes it’s cut with other substances, like cocaine or heroin.
DeWine said heroin is still the number-one drug that’s brought to the BCI Lab for testing in criminal cases; however, the number of heroin cases overall are declining, while fentanyl case numbers continue to rise.
The TEA Party invites the community to listen to Meloy’s presentation at 7 p.m. Monday, June 20 at the Hi-TEC Center, 1575 North High Street (U.S. 62), in Hillsboro.
