City tears down public access station

The city of Hillsboro has begun tearing down the old Hillsboro Public Access Station on North High Street near Southern State Community College. 

Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink told The Highland County Press that the city had obtained a grant to tear down the structure. 

"It was in such bad shape, leaking everywhere, and the bricks inside were in such bad shape," Zink said. "It was no longer in use, so it was really an eyesore."

Hillsboro Safety and Service Director Ralph Holt said the city obtained a grant to cover the $6,000 demolition bid from the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program. The demolition should be completed by sometime next week.
Hillsboro City Council president Lee Koogler said Thursday that he was not aware that the structure was being torn down. when asked if the bidding process was approved by council, Koogler said, "I first learned about it when I read it (on the Highland County Press website)." Since council had not considered the matter, Koogler said he assumed that it was not required.
