Child Abuse Prevention Month proclaimed; HCCS pinwheel ceremony set for April 1

The Highland County Commissioners declared April 2011 as Child Abuse Prevention Month, with the theme for Highland County’s prevention campaign set as “You Make A World Of Difference.”
Attending the proclamation signing were Wendy Jacobs, Lynn Boose, Jeff Rulon, Katie Ross, Ashley McKee and Nicholle Stratton.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and a time to increase community awareness for child abuse prevention while highlighting the successes of families, children, and community professionals. During 2010, nearly 260 children were served by Highland County Children Services. Some of these children were placed in agency foster care for a variety of issues, including physical abuse, neglect of care, sexual abuse, domestic violence, and substance abuse.
Highland County Children Services is again partnering with Prevent Child Abuse Ohio to promote Pinwheels for Prevention, a campaign designed to enhance community awareness about child abuse and neglect.
During the month of April, hundreds of colorful pinwheels (350) will be displayed on the Highland County Courthouse lawn. Each pinwheel represents one reported case of child abuse and neglect in Highland County in 2010.
This campaign will show the public, in a dramatic way, that child abuse and neglect continues to pervade the community.
Children Services would like to invite all community members to assist with the “planting of the pinwheels,” which will occur on Friday, April 1 at 4 p.m. In addition, the Highland County Children Services Board and the staff of Children Services will host the annual Child Abuse Prevention Community Dinner on Thursday, April 7 at the Ponderosa Banquet Room in Hillsboro from 6-8 p.m. This event will focus on prevention and recognition as part of a plan to break the cycle of child abuse and neglect.
Children Services will recognize and present several awards at this event. These awards include the Highland County Foster Parents of the Year, the Outstanding Community Supporter award, the Making a Difference award recognizing outstanding social services in Highland County, and the Highland County Children Services Employee of the Year.
