Bruynis is new OSU extension educator

The Highland County Office of OSU Extension has a new 4-H educator.

Kathy Bruynis is originally from Highland County and started at the office on Nov. 1. She previously worked at the Wyandot County Family and Children First Council and said that the extension educator job was a chance to return home. Her husband, Chris, is an OSU Extension Educator in Ross County. 

"It was a good opportunity to move back to the area and family," Bruynis said. "It's something I thoroughly enjoy and a way to get back into 4-H." 

Bruynis is replacing Libby McNeal, who left the office in July. 

"I want to continue to have active 4-H programming, to grow the program, and to be active with the community - as time will allow with a short staff - not only with the traditional clubs, but through in-school programming," Bruynis said. 

She is a graduate of Hillsboro High School and has degrees from Southern State Community College, Wilmington College and a master's degree in business administration from Tiffin University.  

As a person who got her start in 4-H, Bruynis said that her experience helped her develop skills that she has used throughout her career.

"It has opened a lot of doors and helped me see people in a different light," Bruynis said. "I have worked with a diverse population over the last few years, and 4-H helped enable me to look at the whole person. It develops your leadership skills, through 4-H camps, and has given me contacts throughout the country and throughout the state."

Working with 4-H professionally, Bruynis said, is actually fulfilling a childhood dream. 

"I ran for state fair queen when I was a senior in high school, and at that time I said that I wanted to be a 4-H extension agent. Now, I'm finally able to make that a reality."
