Hillsboro Mayor Justin Harsha announced Thursday, May 15 that Amazon will be building a new delivery center in the City of Hillsboro in the newly constructed Roberts Lane development.

According to Harsha, the new Amazon center will bring approximately 100 jobs to the community. The mayor made the announcement during Hillsboro City Council's monthly meeting.

Harsha said the center is expected to be an “approximately 70,000 square foot facility located on 13 acres on the north side of Cross Lane” on North West Street.

“This project will not only enhance Amazon's delivery network, but more importantly, it will bring over 100 new jobs to our community, offering competitive pay, full benefits from day one and real opportunities for advancement,” Harsha said. “This investment shows Amazon's confidence in Hillsboro as a hub for growth, innovation and opportunity. We're proud to welcome this development and economic momentum it brings, and we look forward to a strong partnership with Amazon in the years ahead.

“Thank you to everyone at the City of Hillsboro, board members of the CIC [Community Improvement Corporation] and to the VanTrust team for making this possible, and thank you to council for your support on the Roberts Road development, which has laid the foundation for opportunities like this and future economic growth for our city. I'd also like to thank the county and the state. It's a big deal for the city.”

The following is the official press release from the City of Hillsboro:

The City of Hillsboro is excited to announce that Amazon is investing in a new delivery station in the city. The facility will be located at 1122 North West Street.

Activity on site will begin very soon, and we look forward to entering the next stages of construction as this exciting project progresses.

“This delivery station will allow us to better serve customers in Hillsboro and the surrounding area,” said Kyle DeGiulio, senior manager of economic development for Amazon. “We’re grateful for our partnership with the City of Hillsboro, and we look forward to sharing more details about this facility in the future.”

The new delivery station will help power the last mile of Amazon’s fulfillment process by enabling fast, everyday delivery directly to customers’ doorstep. Packages are transported to delivery stations from Amazon fulfillment and sortation centers, and then employees process customer packages for last-mile delivery.

“I would like to thank the City of Hillsboro team for all the hard work and collaboration with Amazon to bring this project to reality,” City of Hillsboro Mayor Harsha said. “This represents a major step forward for local economic growth, job creation and a long-term investment in our community. We look forward to building a strong and enduring partnership with Amazon.”

“This facility marks a significant milestone for Hillsboro’s continued growth,” said Lauren Walker, Economic Development Coordinator for the City of Hillsboro. “We’re proud to welcome this level of investment from a company known for its dedication to service and excellence, and we look forward to the positive impact it will have on our local economy and workforce.”

Amazon has created 38,000 full- and part-time jobs in Ohio and invested more than $35 billion across the state, including infrastructure and compensation to their employees since 2010. The average base wage for hourly employees in the United States is more than $22 per hour, and average total compensation is more than $29 per hour when you include the value of elected benefits (things like health care from the first day on the job).

1.3 Acres is only 56,000 square feet. Hard to build 70,000 square foot building on that much land.
••••Publisher's note: 13 acres; not 1.3.

But you have to compare apples to apples. "Amazon has created 38,000 full- and part-time jobs in Ohio and invested more than $35 billion across the state, including infrastructure and compensation to their employees since 2010. The average base wage for hourly employees in the United States is more than $22 per hour"

It's interesting that all the stats about how much has been invested and jobs created are specifically Hillsboro and Ohio, but the average base pay rate is national. What's the average base rate for Ohio? I think it's probably going to be less than $22 an hour. Are there going to 100 full time jobs or 100 part time jobs?

Don't get me wrong. I think 100 jobs that pay an average of $880 a week would be great, but I don't think that's what's going to happen.

I work at Amazon Air in Wilimington Ohio and I assure you that is probably right on the money. . Amazon is a good company to work for and pays very well while having excellent benifits. I am a Process assistant (tier 3) and growth is definitely possible with this company along with pay raises.
••••Publisher's note: Thank you for the clarification. Some folks (the AOCs of the world come to mind) are quick to criticize new job opportunities with little knowledge of the process.

Rural elderly finally have a nice uncrowded road to drive safely away from all the crazy city drivers in town and now that road is going to end up totally ruined.

Why not just leave well enough alone?

Having an old rural town is not enough for everyone?

Why shame Hillsboro by trying to make it all big urban city?

Not everything has to be all crazy money driven.

No longer the rural town of my birth

Heartbreaking.
