Big Brothers Big Sisters awarded grant from Fifth Third Bank

Fifth Third Bank celebrated its namesake – May 3, otherwise known as 5/3 – by beginning the Community Involvement Grant program, in which employees nominate organizations throughout the region to receive grants worth $530. Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Ohio was one of those grant recipients.
“We recognize the value that volunteers bring to many organizations, so this year we introduced a new program that provides grants to nonprofits where our employees have been engaged as volunteers for many years,” Debbie Beyer, the bank’s vice president of Marketing and Community Affairs, said in a statement. “We hope to continue the Community Involvement Grant program in future years.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Ohio was one of more than 30 organizations nominated, and one of several recipients whose number includes Mid-Ohio Foodbank and Christmas for Needy Kids.
“It’s awesome,” said Karen McDonald-Myers, Big Brothers Big Sisters executive director. “It was great to even be considered.”
And what does the agency plan to do with its unexpected windfall?
McDonald-Myers said they might use the money to buy another laptop, as staff members now have to bring laptops when they leave the office because of the agency’s new system for tracking match information. Or they might buy some new software.
No matter what the agency decides to spend it on, the grant is definitely appreciated.
“We never have money for equipment,” McDonald-Myers said.
McDonald-Myers hopes the award will come with other benefits, too – namely a greater awareness of Big Brothers Big Sisters and its ever-present need for volunteers and donations.
“Hopefully, [the award] would generate more interest in volunteerism, even within the Fifth Third community,” McDonald-Myers said. “Or, if other banks have programs like this, they might think of us.”
