A new salon in uptown Hillsboro is inviting the community to “feel the difference” with their commitment to taking care of customers in a relaxing atmosphere.
Appearances Salon, which opened Feb. 22, is co-owned by stylists Breanna Howard and Samantha Pitzer and also includes stylists Sydney Corzatt, Shauna Davidson, Tara Decker, Jamie Knedler and Charlotte Taylor and massage therapist Lauren Giordano.
While the salon focuses on hair, and Pitzer said most of their stylists specialize in color, they also offer manicures and pedicures, including shellac and gel. Howard also specializes in ethnic hair.
“Breanna and I both trained under Wella Professionals, and we use their products, as well as Sebastian,” Pitzer said.
Appearances also offers “special occasion” hairstyles and is accepting appointments for prom up-dos, which start at $45.
“At Wella Professionals, we learned a lot,” Pitzer said. “We do a lot of continuing education to learn styles for everyday. We try to stick to what’s trending.”
The salon’s motto is “Feel the difference,” which Pitzer said is based on their commitment to focusing on the clients.
“We want our clients to be relaxed and comfortable when they come in here and know they are in good hands,” Pitzer said.
A lounge area in the back of the salon includes comfortable couches and hot and cold refreshments for clients.
“We try to make it nice for clients,” Howard said.
Pitzer and Howard worked together at a salon in Wilmington before joining forces to start their own business.
“I grew up in Hillsboro, and Breanna is from Peebles,” Pitzer said. “It was one of those things that made sense. This is coming home for us.”
As they continue to build their client base, Pitzer said the experience so far has been “surreal.”
“It’s kind of surreal,” Pitzer said. “Me and Breanna started working together and daydreamed about opening our own salon. When this opportunity came up, we jumped on it. We blinked, and it was here.”
Howard said that the experience has been great so far.
“Opening our own salon is something we both really wanted,” Howard said.

Knedler, who has worked as a cosmetologist for several years, said she appreciates the change of pace at Appearances.
“It’s been fun, and it’s a very nice place to work,” Knedler said. “It’s a really nice atmosphere.”
Pitzer said they hope to “stay connected” in the community, participating in local and/or Hillsboro Uptown Business Association events.
Several specials are being featured at the salon this spring. Pitzer, Howard and Knedler are currently offering a special, the 20/20 Referral Program.
“If you refer someone and spend $50 or more, you both get 20 percent off,” Pitzer said.
Giordano is also offering $10 off your first massage, Pitzer said.
Appearances Salon, located at 107 West Main Street in Hillsboro, is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. For more information, or to make an appointment, call (937) 402-4505.
