Led by Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera, a parade marched through Buford during Monday morning’s annual Memorial Day observances.
Residents lined along state Route 138 and 134 waved “Old Glory” as the Whiteoak band played “You’re a Grand Old Flag” as the parade proceeded to the Buford Cemetery on a warm and sunny day in Clay Township.
Buford pastor Ken Barr was the day’s keynote speaker, and he told the 150 to 200 residents in attendance that Memorial Day should be a time of respect, remembrance and gratitude.

“When we leave here today, don’t be sad, be happy,” Barr said.
“The fallen men and women served with gladness and determination to come home victorious in battle. Leave here today with gratitude. Be grateful that someone you didn’t even know cared enough for us and for this country that they were willing to serve to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.
“To you young people here today not sure of what is really going on, know this: Men and women lost their lives fighting for your freedom. In return, they ask for your respect and gratitude.”
