CHILLICOTHE - Mark Shuter has no intention of going undercover, like those top executives who appear on TV's "Undercover Boss."
Instead, the president and CEO of Adena Health System, without hiding his identity, plans on spending a couple days a month working with Adena employees, getting to know them, understanding what they do and allowing them to get to know him.
For the affable Shuter, who is celebrating five years as Adena's CEO, it's an opportunity to better connect with those who are helping Adena to be the best healthcare organization in the nation.
Next month, for instance, don't be surprised to see him dressed in a uniform working alongside Environmental Services employees. That's the first scheduled appearance of "Where's Mark Shuter," an innocent takeoff of "Where's Waldo" and "Undercover Boss."
Carolyn Hice, assistant to the president, who is helping to bring a new identity to her boss, is already working on future appearances for Shuter.
"No, he's not going undercover," she said. "And unlike Waldo, he won't be hiding his identity. Instead, he'll be breaking those presumed barriers between executive staff and other employees here at Adena," she said.
"We're all working to make Adena a great place for families, friends and others in our communities when help is needed," he said. "We all have a mission here."
Along with rubbing shoulders with employees within the medical center, Hice is working with Shuter to schedule visits to outlying centers.
"Spending time with employees and doing what they are doing allows people to get to know the CEO," Hice said. "And I think that¹s wonderful."
Along with the "Where's Mark Shuter" initiative, the CEO also has begun meeting with new employees over breakfast. The first session was held earlier this week. Beginning in a few weeks, Shuter also is planning on meeting with new physicians over lunch.
In October, Shuter and Hice are organizing an Oktoberfest event for Adena's management time. Along with team building, special emphasis will be paid to having fun together, Hice said.
"No BlackBerries will be allowed," she said.
Additionally, plans are in the work to update the "listening post" program, which has existed at Adena for the past couple years. The program enables groups of managers to meet with Shuter on a routine basis to discuss issues.
"All of these efforts are aimed at improving the way we feel about each other here at Adena, about the important roles we play here and how we care for patients," Shuter said.
