1 killed in crash involving Paint Valley school bus

One person was killed and others were injured Wednesday in a crash involving a Paint Valley Local Schools bus. 

The Ross County Sheriff's Office told The Highland County Press that the driver of a car involved in the crash with the bus was killed, and that several others were injured.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. on U.S. 50 near Bainbridge, and officers were still investigating at the scene just after 5 p.m.

Victims from the crash were transported to Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe. 

Paint Valley Schools Superintendent Gary Uhrig said that it was an "ugly looking crash" and that he is thankful that the students escaped without serious injuries.

"The driver originally had 43 students, and had dropped some off, and there were 38 on the bus at the time of the collision," Uhrig said. "The bus was struck in the front, and 11 kids were transported to Adena and one was transported to Greenfield. They all appeared to be in good shape. There were not any life-threatening injuries. We wanted to take those 12 in to get checked out to make sure everyone was OK.

Urhig said that the students on the bus were ranged from elementary school-aged to high school students. 

"There were several teachers on the scene, and we're really thankful for the job they did," he said. "The elementary school principal was there right after the accident happened and helped with the kids. We want to thank the parents for their help. There were some who got here early and were able to help some of the children, and some of the high school kids were helping out, as well. We want to thank all of them. We're just happy that no one was seriously injured. It was really an ugly looking accident. They make buses very safe today, with high-backed seats and, thankfully, the kids were not seriously injured."
