Sharing the spirit of Christmas

To the editor:

I would like to nominate Chet and Heather Gibson of Greenfield for The Highland County Press Citizens of the Week.

Heather and I are both employed by Highland County Help Me Grow, and this week was the end of our Adopt A Family project which has been an ongoing service to our Help Me Grow families every December.

Yesterday, families were coming to the office to pick up donated presents for their children who
were sponsored. One mom asked if we could sponsor one more family that just moved to Ohio from Wisconsin on Sunday and the mom would not be able to offer any gifts for her three children this year.

I told her I would take the children's names ages and sizes and give them to Heather. She
sometimes is able to pull some tricks out of her hat at the last minute.

After a phone call to the mom that made this request, Heather discovered the recently relocated mom had explained to her three children that they would not be receiving any Christmas presents from Santa this year. (It's unacceptable for any child not to have a visit from Santa!)

Pulling tricks out of her hat at the last minute is not anything new for Heather, and she did just that. After some phone calls, some coupons pulled together (another one of her talents) she collected "new" donated items, went to a local clothing store and made some fantastic deals.

In fact, one little girl's shirt, after coupons, rang up to 43 cents total. She raided her own box of goodies at home from smart couponing all year for some nifty kids toiletry items and had a pretty nice gift selection for three children from out of state.

As Heather and her husband were driving to deliver the gifts, Chet who couldn't bear the thought of any child not having a "good Christmas," went straight, instead of turning down the road to the home. The Gibsons did a little more shopping, "so each child could have a new outfit to wear back to school after the holidays," in Chet's words.

Santa did not forget these three children this year due to the Gibsons' generosity.

They are two special people who I think deserve the Citizen of the Week award from your newspaper.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Cindy Bailey

Editor's note: Cindy, consider it done. Merry Christmas!
