School board member clarifies quote; urges 'no' vote on Issue 2

To the editor:

There was an error in your Oct. 22 Hillsboro School Board article written by Brandy Chandler.

The error is in a quote attributed to me. I did say, "The problem is not on the expenditure side. We've got spending under control. The problem is on the funding side because we're not fully funded at the state and federal level."

I did not say, "It's not collective with these two units," but Brandy inserted this sentence into my quote. In fact, I said, "It's not (the problem is not) the collective bargaining agreements we have entered into with the two unions."

I went on to conclude my report by encouraging voters to vote NO on Issue 2 because the financial problems that Hillsboro City Schools is facing are not caused by costly union contracts but by lack of state funding.

If there is any doubt about what I said and did not say at a school board meting, my statements can be verified by Superintendent Rick Earley and Board Chairman Laura Bagshaw.

Sincerely,
Kenneth O. Shull
