To the editor:

The Highland County Humane Society's adoptions as well as donations have fallen off dramatically. The shelter provides a much-needed service to the community. Currently, we are housing 54 dogs and 12 cats.

The picture above shows a dog who we removed from a property in Hillsboro on Sept. 30. The dog is very malnourished and has no body fat or muscle. When I saw her, my heart went out to her. She was tied to a tree, curled up in a ball, lying in the dirt with no shelter, food or water. I no longer try to understand what the owner is thinking when I
see this. There is no understanding people like this.

We have to be there for the animal. Had we not removed her, she would have died of starvation. She is now curled up in a chair in our office since there was no kennel available. She is warm, comfy, well-fed, and most importantly, she is loved.

All of the animals at the humane society are up to date on vaccinations and deworming. If a vet is needed, we see to it they get one. We are the voice of the animals in this county who have been neglected, treated cruelly or abandoned. They are our first priority. We do know we can't save them all, but we won't go down without a fight to protect them.

We are a nonprofit shelter with no state or county funding. Most weeks, we survive on a wing and a prayer. My hope is that the people of Highland County will care enough to support our mission so that no animal has to go without. Please help to keep our shelter going. No donation is too small. Help us now so that we may continue to help them.

Sincerely,
Melanie Dodson
