To the editor:

My name is Chad E. McConnaughey, and I am running for the office of Highland County recorder.

I was born in 1976 to Steve and Beverly McConnaughey of Buford. I have three brothers and two sisters. My dad was a farmer as I grew up, and my mom was a homemaker. I was raised with excellent role models in my life in my parents and my grandparents. My father graduated from Buford High School, and my mother, Beverly (Emery), graduated from Whiteoak High School.

In 1994, I graduated from Lynchburg-Clay High School, and then graduated from Southern State Community College (cum laude) in 1996 with an associate's degree in applied science with a focus in computer assisted design. I was a member of the JJ Wiggins National Honor Society at LC, and a member of Phi Theta Kappa at SSCC.

While attending college, I worked full-time at Jerry Haag Motors until 1995. It was then that I was hired by McCarty Associates, LLC in Hillsboro. I continued working at McCarty’s while finishing up my degree at SSCC. I have been with McCarty Associates for 17 years, where I have gained valuable business experience, and the tools that would directly aide me in the position of Highland County Recorder. I have spent a bulk of those 17 years doing deed/mortgage research within the recorder's office.

In 1996, I was married to my wife, Becky. We have three wonderful children who keep us very active and busy. My wife is employed with Lynchburg-Clay Schools, where she is the administrative assistant to the superintendent.

My interests and hobbies include:

• Involvement with many various youth sports teams and associations since high school. I have coached baseball, basketball, softball and soccer.

• I also served as the Athletic Booster President at Lynchburg-Clay Schools for five years. During this time, with the help of many great people, we have been able to do great things for our student-athletes at Lynchburg-Clay.

• Serve as elder and treasurer at the Sugar Tree Ridge Church of Christ. I enjoy serving with great people on the church board and congregation, and I feel these experiences will only strengthen my abilities to serve in the Recorder's  Office.

• Recently been elected to serve on the School Board at Lynchburg-Clay. I am looking forward to working with our staff and administration continuing the excellence that has been achieved at our schools. It is a team effort, and I look forward to one of my passions, which is to be involved with assisting our children learn, grow and become respectful citizens of this great state and nation.

• I have been a member of an American Cancer Society Relay for Life team since 1995, raising over $30,000 for the Highland County Relay For Life.

I look forward to the opportunity to represent and serve the citizens of Highland County. I feel that my 17 years of experience in the land surveying field will greatly aid me in this position. My technical skills will assist the office in keeping up with technology and continuing to properly record the public records of Highland County.

Sincerely,
Chad E. McConnaughey
