Wildcats earn win over Peebles in SHAC opener

MOWRYSTOWN — The Whiteoak Wildcats earned a tough Southern Hills Athletic Conference win on Friday night by defending their home court against the visiting Peebles Indians, 47-42 in a very physical game to start the conference schedule.
The Wildcats had two senior players finish in double-figure scoring where Carson Emery totaled 19 points in the win, while teammate Landon Barnett finished with 15 points in the Wildcats’ victory.
Also in the scoring column for WHS were senior Logan Bieler with seven points, senior Luken Roades with three points, junior Weston Blair with two points and senior David Kennedy with one point.
In all, the Wildcats led after each of the four quarters played, beginning with the first frame where they build a slight 12-10 lead at the end of the first frame.
Peebles started the game with all the offense, taking a 6-0 lead following baskets from Cory Reed and Zane Knechtly. WHS reached the scoreboard with a basket at the 2:51 mark of the opening quarter as Emery reached the scoreboard with a basket in the paint.
Next was Blair with two points for WHS, and then it was Emery again with another two-point basket, tying the score at 6-6 with 2:02 left in the quarter.
Peebles regained the lead with two made free throws, but WHS was there to take the lead back with a three-point play from Bieler with strong points in the paint and the ensuing made free throw with 24.5 left in the quarter.
Peebles followed with a 3-pointer, but it was the Wildcats who ended the frame with three points as Emery made three straight free throws with no time left on the first-quarter clock, putting the Wildcats in front, 12-10 after one frame.
WHS kept a two-point lead when the second quarter came to a close, leading 20-18 at halftime.
The score was tied twice in the second at 12 and 14 points, but eventually WHS had five straight points in the quarter with four of those points by Barnett and one free throw made by Kennedy for a 20-15 lead. Peebles scored three points with 1:14 left in the second, as that was the final shot made in the second quarter, leaving WHS in front as halftime arrived.
WHS scored 11 points in the third quarter and followed that with 16 more points in the fourth frame to complete their 47 points of scoring to gain the SHAC win.
Next for WHS (2-0) is a road SHAC game on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at Fairfield against the rival Lions.
