BAINBRIDGE — Scoring at least one touchdown in each quarter, it didn’t take long for the Paint Valley Bearcats to pick up from a season ago, as they shut out New Miami 34-0 Friday night in week one of the high school football season.
“A shut out is a positive to start out the season,” Paint Valley head coach Pete Hollon said. “We didn’t play really well offensively, but we did score touchdowns on defense and special teams.”
The first scoring drive for the ‘Cats came with 7:02 left in the first quarter when senior running back Wes Parker bruised his way into the endzone on a 7-yard run.
The total drive went nine play for 89 yards. Garett Tyree made the score 7-0 with a PAT.
New Miami, of the Miami Valley Conference, continued to have trouble containing Parker in the second quarter as the senior returned an intercepted pass 56 yards for a touchdown. After the blocked extra point attempt the ‘Cats led 13-0. In the third quarter the special teams play of Paint Valley took center stage with Jeremyah Tennant taking the ball 84 yards to paydirt with 11:51 left in the quarter. Tyree put the ball between the uprights to give the ‘Cats a 20-point advantage.
With 7:18 left in the third, Parker reached the endzone for the third time with a 13-yard dash. Tyree made his third PAT increasing the ‘Cats’ lead to 27 points. The final score came with 9:18 left in the fourth quarter when Tyree broke away for a 19-yard run to the endzone. Nick Gragg scored the extra point, making the score 34-0.
PV quarterback Brenan Dove finished the season opener 4-for-9 for 107 yards. As for the rushing attack by the ‘Cats, it was a display of balance and team running as Ben Krech led PV with 10 carries for 89 yards. He was followed by Parker with seven carries for 59 yards. Tyree rushed for 51 yards on five attempts and Dove finished with 51 yards on nine runs. Parker was the leading receiver for Paint Valley with two catches for 73 yards. Tyree and Tennant each had one catch for 17 yards.
“Wes had a big night. He has done this for the past two years, but was more of a role player then,” Hollon said.
On defense Adam Cooper led with 10 tackles. Tennant earned nine tackles.
Tyree, who is the returning SVC Punter of the Year, had four punts for a 37-yard average, with two landing inside the 15-yard line.
The ‘Cats had 10 penalties for 115 yards. PV finished the game with 387 total offensive yards, with New Miami gaining 92. “We’ve had some major issues this offseason and no disrespect to anyone, but this was like our second scrimmage,” Hollon said. “We weren’t ready to take the field as a football team in our final scrimmage. What’s hard is we lost 138 yards and two touchdowns called back.”[[In-content Ad]]
