There were a couple of new football coaches in the SCOL this season. Jim “Tate” Taylor had stepped down, at Hillsboro, and long-time assistant coach Jim Horne had been elevated to the head coaching position. Horne enjoyed a rather harmonious relationship with the athletes, as did his predecessor. But he would be faced with a challenge, as this year’s team would be led by a freshman quarterback, Chris Walker.

This time the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs' game at Waverly will be a little tougher than their Division III SE District Sectional opener.

I can't help but think about basketball this time of the year. Whether I'm giving congratulations, or I'm being grumpy about things I disagree with, or if I'm seeing facts that catch my eye, it is safe to say from November through March I think about basketball ... a lot.

Following the first game in which the co-SCOL champion Miami Trace was defeated by the Waverly Tigers, 59-34, it was the Hillsboro Indians, also a co-SCOL champion, who stayed alive in a physical contest with their league and cross-county rival, defeating McClain, 51-39.

The Fairfield Lions split their final two games of the regular season, defeating the Manchester Greyhounds Saturday night, 52-50 and falling to the Eastern Brown Warriors, 56-54.

The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs overcame a lot Monday night in their opening round Division III SE District Sectional matchup. LC fended off not only a strong start by the North Adams Green Devils, but a strong finish by NA for a 47-44 win.

The season is on the line Tuesday night at Southeastern High School, when the Hillsboro Indians face the McClain Tigers in the Division II SE District semifinals for a chance to play for a sectional title this Friday.
