HILLSBORO  — The Fairfield Lions traveled to Hillsboro and conquered the host Hillsboro Indians with a 5-0 victory in the Highland County battle.

This is Fairfield’s third consecutive shutout to start the 2026 season, as they've defeated Clinton-Massie 1-0 and Ripley 3-0. Fairfield to start the season has outscored their opponents 9-0.

“This is our third win in a row, and our defense is working pretty well,” Fairfield head coach Justin Sowders said. “We’ve put a lot of effort into them. They have a lot of cohesion together with Adron Hale and Mason Lytle working together. It is a nice freshman-senior combo to have.

“Our goalie Anderson Humphreys … I have worked with him for three years now, as an assistant the past two years and now as the head coach. We have been working together to make him as good as we can get him, and he has done very well.”

In the first half, the Lions built a three-goal lead once halftime arrived, including two goals by junior Logan Burgess.

Burgess's first goal of the match came with 21:27 left in the first half for the 1-0 lead.

Less than six minutes later, Burgess, again, kicked the ball past the defense of the Indians with his second goal of the half for a 2-0 lead.

The Lions added a third goal, this time off a 35-plus yard kick by sophomore Blake Walters for a three-goal advantage.

“We came out flat, but we built into the game. We finally got our legs about 20 minutes in, and once the scoring started we were playing hard,” Sowders said. “It was very good to see Logan and Blake do that (score the first three goals), to get us from 0-0 to 3-0, and it was huge for momentum.”

Fairfield’s lead jumped to four goals when the Indians had an own goal with 11:38 left in regulation.

The Lions scored one final goal with 0.1 left on the clock as Tristan Everhart sent the ball in the net after racing past the Hillsboro defense.

Again, the defense of the Lions, which includes Humphreys, Levi Hughes, Noah Eldridge, Hale, Lytle and Joel Matthews, has been a standout to start the season.

“It has been a goal for us to have a lot of shutouts,” Sowders said. “We play good all-around ball, and shutouts are a part of that. We have been working hard on it, and they have been playing together and working toward keeping the score at zero. We come into the game with the mindset it is 0-0 all the way through. The guys have all grown into their roles, they know what I want from them, and they know exactly what to do when they get the ball.”

Next for Fairfield is a non-conference game on Thursday, Aug. 20 on the road against Bethel-Tate at 5 p.m.

The Indians are scheduled to play next on Thursday, Aug. 20 on the road in a non-conference game at Western Brown at 5 p.m.
