Route 73 crash claims Hillsboro couple; witnesses asked to come forward

A Hillsboro couple were killed as the result of a motor vehicle/motorcycle accident at state Route 73 and Welcome Road, northwest of Hillsboro, Wednesday afternoon.

The Wilmington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the incident remains under investigation, and they are asking that any witnesses of the crash to contact the Post. 

 According to the OSHP, at approximately 3:21 p.m. Wednesday, a 2004 Chrysler Town and Country, driven by a 91-year-old Hillsboro resident, was northbound on state Route 73, when the driver attempted to turn onto Welcome Road, striking a 2004 Honda VT1100C motorcycle, which was traveling southbound on state Route 73.

 The motorcycle was driven by Gary B. Howland, 61, of Hillsboro, and his wife, Kathryn J. Howland, 57, was a passenger on the motorcycle. 

Gary Howland sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Highland County Coroner Dr. Paul Terrell. Hours after the crash, Kathryn Howland succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. 

"Motorcycle helmets were not in use, and alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected," according to the Post. "The crash investigation remains open and ongoing. Any witnesses are asked to contact the Wilmington Post with further information pertaining to the investigation."

The Ohio Department of Transportation reported the highway was closed due to the accident and investigation.
