Mayor proclaims May 13-20 as 'Buddy Poppy Week'

Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings has proclaimed the week of May 13-20 as "Buddy Poppy Week."

The annual sale of Buddy Poppies by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States has been officially recognized and endorsed by the governmental leaders since 1922.

Hastings signed the proclamation Monday, before Hillsboro Post 9094 Members Dwight Reynolds, Rick Wilkin and George Steward.

According to the proclamation, "Buddy poppies are assembled by disabled veterans and the proceeds of this worthy fundraising campaign are used exclusively for the benefit of disabled, needy veterans, widows and orphans of deceased veterans. The basic purpose of the annual sale of Buddy Poppies by the Veterans of Foreign Wars is eloquently reflected in the desire to 'Honor the Dead by Helping the living.'"

Area veterans will be at local businesses accepting donations in exchange for the Buddy Poppies May 18-19.

Additionally, Steward said that this week, installation will begin at the Highland County Veterans Memorial on more than 1,000 bricks, each featuring the name of a veteran with ties to Highland County. Steward said that the names feature current members of the armed forces, and veterans dating back to the Civil and Revolutionary Wars. A dedication for the memorial, located on the lawn of the Highland County Courthouse, is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend.
