The Highland County Board of Commissioners proclaimed the third Saturday in May, May 19, 2012, as PFC Zachary R. Gullett Day to honor Gullett's "commitment and dedication to his county and his country through his ultimate sacrifice."

At the May 16 board meeting, commissioners encouraged all Highland County residents to remember Gullett's sacrifice and support his memorial scholarship.

PFC Zachary R. Gullett was born in Dayton on July 3, 1986, the son of Alan Michael and Connie (Helterbrand) Gullett. On Tuesday, May 1, 2007, PFC Gullett died while stationed in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq while serving his country with C Company 787 Military Police Battalion, serving with Multi-National Force-Iraq. He was a member of the 984th MP Company.

A fundraising spaghetti dinner to help support the scholarship will be held Saturday, May 19 from 4-7 p.m. at the Hillsboro VFW Post 9094.
