Volunteers began laying bricks at the Highland County Veterans' Memorial, located in front of the Highland County Courthouse, on Tuesday, May 15.

Greg Jones, of Cornerstone Masonry, said that he and fellow volunteer Wayne Dance wanted to volunteer on this portion of the project to give back to the community and to the veterans honored in the memorial.

"We're donating our time, trying to do our part," Jones said.

Plain red bricks from the Belden Brick Company were placed in front of the memorial today. Workers said that the process of laying engraved bricks memorializing or honoring local soldiers would begin Wednesday afternoon.
