Annual 'brake for breakfast' Oct. 7

The Foster J. Boyd, MD, Regional Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society have teamed up once again to encourage women to take a few minutes out of their busy morning routine to pause and consider their risk for breast cancer.
On Wednesday, Oct. 7, between the hours of 7-9 a.m., women can drive through the parking lot at the cancer center located at 31 Farquhar Ave., Wilmington, for a free to-go breakfast, breast cancer information and free give-away items.
Breast cancer continues to be the most common cancer and second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. The good news is that with early detection and the advances in treatment, women are surviving breast cancer at a much higher rate. Early detection remains the best strategy for fighting the disease.
“Even though October is breast cancer awareness month, women should be focused on taking the preventative steps all year long.” says Dr. Cheryl Skinner, director of Medical Oncology at the Boyd Cancer Center. “Our hope is that the women who drive through will really take to heart the importance of self breast exams and annual mammograms after the age of 40.”
The Brake for Breakfast process is simple and takes only a few minutes. Women drive through the parking lot at the cancer center and make three stops. The first stop is to pick up a healthy to-go breakfast. The second stop is the information station where she picks up breast cancer awareness information, including an appointment card that instructs how to schedule a mammogram. Anyone scheduling their mammograms at CMH during the months of October or November will be entered into a drawing for a prize. The third and final stop is to pick up a free goodies promoting breast cancer awareness.
“Last year’s event was a huge success.” says Barb Multon, American Cancer Society mission chair for breast cancer awareness. “We planned for 300 women in vehicles to come through the Boyd Cancer Center parking lot and we actually had more than that so this year we are planning for 500.”
