According to a report from sports editor Paul Boggs of the Jackson County Times-Journal via Twitter, Jackson High School applied for membership to the South Central Ohio League on Friday and to the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) and Southern Ohio Athletic Conference (SOC) on Monday.

Earlier this month, the Tri-Valley Conference (TVC) turned down Jackson for the second time.

Boggs, who can be found on Twitter @BoggsTJSports, also tweeted the SCOL Board of Control meeting is set for Thursday, March 19.

Currently, the SCOL consists of Hillsboro and McClain in Highland County; Wilmington, Clinton-Massie and East Clinton of Clinton County; Washington and Miami Trace of Fayette County; and Chillicothe of Ross County for the current eight-team league.

Wilmington and Chillicothe were the last two teams voted into the SCOL in 2012, following the departure of Madison-Plains and London to the Mid-State League two seasons ago.

This school year was the first season for Wilmington in their return to the SCOL, and Chillicothe returned a year before that.

In a phone call with an SCOL official Monday afternoon, no official comment was made on Jackson.

One downside of JHS and the SCOL would be travel, as JHS and Clinton-Massie are exactly 100 miles apart from each other. The closest school would be Chillicothe at 36 miles, with the next-closest team, McClain, nearly 60 miles away. Hillsboro and Jackson are 68 miles apart.

The current longest drive between SCOL schools is 66 miles, between Chillicothe and Clinton-Massie.

The SCOL began in 1923 and has disbanded twice in its history, the first time from 1931-35 and also from 1992-03. When the league returned, it was a six-team league, and since then it has expanded to a seven and now an eight-team league.
