HILLSBORO — In two consecutive nights, the McClain Lady Tigers volleyball team have squared off with their counterparts from Highland County, and on both of those nights to start the week, they’ve left the opposing court with the win.
Monday saw the Lady Tigers defeat the Fairfield Lady Lions in three straight sets, but on Tuesday, the stakes were a little higher being against cross-county rival Hillsboro at HHS, along with the match being for a win in the South Central Ohio League standings.
McClain won the league match in four sets, winning sets one, two and four by scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-12. Hillsboro won the third set with a score of 25-17 on their home court.
“We played well, and we had a girl missing, so we played some girls at different spots,” MHS head coach Emma Gall said. “They are fulfilling those roles and doing what I’m asking them to do, so we are playing well.
“I changed up the rotation on the third set, and I think that is what kind of threw them off a little bit. They are creatures of habit.”
Though MHS won the first set, the Lady Indians of HHS didn’t make it easy as they rallied back from a decent deficit to make it a three-point differential in the final score of the first set.
The second set didn’t get as close for HHS, as McClain led at one point in the latter part of the second set by a 19-10 score. Later, MHS moved their lead to 21-14 with a play at the front of the net by Chayden Pitzer. That was followed by a point off a serve from Liz Kegley for a 22-14 advantage.
HHS didn’t back off, though, as Taylor Remsing scored a point for HHS, also with a play at the net. MHS answered with three straight points for the 25-15 win.
At the start of the third set, the Lady Indians set the tone by building a 5-0 lead off serves from Mallory Overberg, a hit at the net from Remsing, plus a dig from Overberg that scored a point for the Lady Indians.
MHS broke up the scoring with a point by Kegley, and later, as the third set continued, along with a timeout by MHS, the Lady Tigers got to within a point of the HHS lead at 8-7.
The thing for the third set for HHS is they never let up and never relinquished the lead, as they built a lead with points from Overberg off a spike, plus an ace by Jordan Williamson for a lead of 11-9.
Later in the third set, McClain’s Malea Montavon got the Lady Tigers to within two points of HHS with a point, but again HHS answered with points of their own to build a 17-12 lead, forcing the Lady Tigers to call a second timeout.

Again, following the timeout, MHS rallied to make it a two-point deficit with help from a serve by Montavon for a 17-15 score. HHS was there to answer each rally by MHS with points of their own, as Overberg and Remsing pushed the Lady Indians’ lead to 20-15.
From there, an out-of-bound hit by MHS, plus points from Overberg and Remsing, once again gave the Lady Indians a lead of 23-15. Eventually, HHS won the third set with a play at the front of the net by Overberg for the 25-17 win.
In what became the fourth and final set of the match, MHS never trailed, scoring the first two points of the set and eventually leading 4-2 off big hits by Pitzer. Later, MHS had a 12-4 lead, with the 12th point being scored on a hit by Hunter Scott. Montavon had a forceful spike to the HHS side of the court to extend the Lady Tigers’ lead to 15-7. An ace by Kegley increased the lead to 16-7.
MHS eventually raced away with the fourth set and match win as they won by a 25-12 score, including a late point from Lexie Barton, who helped score the 23rd point of the set for MHS.
